Fostering digital transformation of science in Kenya and Tanzania (FOSTER)

Project purpose
FOSTER strengthens the digital transformation of science in Kenya and Tanzania by advancing Open Science principles. It helps higher education institutions develop the knowledge, infrastructure and policies required for more open, transparent, collaborative and reusable research.
Objectives and key activities
The partners build a shared understanding of Open Science, assess institutional needs, and develop training and study content. The project supports the upgrading of repositories and portals in line with FAIR principles, the preparation of institutional policies and recommendations for national frameworks, and the involvement of citizen science. The work is organised into five areas: management and quality assurance, stakeholder consensus, university transition, Open Science policies, and dissemination and sustainability.
Role of ISSBS
ISSBS participates as co-coordinator and content partner. It contributes to training, study content and Open Science policies, hosts a capacity-building workshop under the policy work package, and supports quality assurance, dissemination and the sustainability of project results.
Expected results
• stronger Open Science competences among researchers, higher education staff and institutional leaders;
• new courses and training, and repositories and portals improved in line with FAIR principles;
• institutional policies, recommendations for national frameworks and citizen science activities.
